STSS Race Day: Accord Battle of the Bullring™ Storylines, Stars & Sleepers
Written by Chris Moore
ACCORD, NY Bullring race day!
Tonight, the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco heads to Accord Speedway for the 10th running of the Battle of the Bullring.™
The series fires back to life for the first time in almost exactly one month, for Round No. 2 of the River Valley Builders North Region at the Ulster County Bullring.
The 50-lap affair rewards the winner with a $6,000 paycheck for their efforts. $1,000 is reserved for 10th and $500 to take the green flag, as part of a purse of over $27,000.
THE STORYLINES
Accord Speedway has undergone a major renovation over the course of the off-season. The backstretch has been widened, the banking has been lowered and the corners have been brought in, making the speedway into a sweeping D-shape more conducive to side-by-side racing.
Defending North Region champion Matt Sheppard kicked off his title defense with an opening round triumph at Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, N.Y., on April 8.
Sheppard outdueled Larry Wight and Mat Williamson for the win at the House of Power.™
Middletown, N.Y.™s Anthony Perrego leads all competitors with three STSS wins (™14, ™17, ™21) in Accord Speedway competition. Perrego remains the only driver with multiple Battle of the Bullring™ triumphs.
Tonight™s race is the only River Valley Builders North Region race for the month of May, with Round No. 3 coming up at Dundee, N.Y.™s Outlaw Speedway on Tuesday, June 6.
THE STARS
Anthony Perrego has his name perennially etched on the favorites list at Accord Speedway. The Ant Man™s™ resume has long spoken for itself at the quarter-mile bullring. Perrego placed seventh in the 2022 edition of the event.
Wurtsboro, N.Y.™s Danny Creeden has found a burst of speed to kick off his ™23 season in the Southern Tier of New York State. Creeden will look to cash in with a $6,000 payday at Accord. Creeden won the 2013 event, prior to STSS sanctioning and was the runner-up last year.
Andy Bachetti loves racing at Accord Speedway. The former speedway regular won the ™19 Battle of the Bullring™ and was third in last season™s edition. The Sheffield, Mass. native does some of his best work on smaller venues.
THE SLEEPERS
While it™s hard to call a defending winner of the race a sleeper,™ Canadian Mat Williamson faces an obstacle nobody has tamed yet at the Big A.™ Williamson seeks to become the first driver to win back-to-back Battle of the Bullring™ races after his first Accord win in last year™s victory.
Bohemia, N.Y.™s Dillon Steuer is one of the less-talked-about young stars of Modified racing. However, Steuer gives good reason to believe he™ll make some noise heading into Accord. He™s fresh off of a sixth-place run in last year™s event, and a fourth-place finish in the North Region opener at Orange County. Steuer comes in with momentum to steal his first ever STSS win.
Another driver seeking his breakthrough STSS victory is Pipersville, Pa.™s Danny Bouc. Bouc will make his first appearance at Accord, following a Saturday night win at New Egypt (N.J.) Speedway. New Egypt is known for its D-shaped raceway, giving the Keystone State invader an advantage, even at a speedway he has never seen.
ALSO IN ACTION
The STSS Crate 602 Sportsman get underway in the Precision Hydraulic & Oil North Region. The first Round of the North Region pays the winner of the 25-lap affair with a $1,500 top prize and $100 to take the green flag.
