Written by Chris Moore
PLATTSBURGH, NY – Adirondack Race Day!
The Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco adds track No. 34 to its 11-year history tonight.
Airborne Park Speedway hosts the stars of the STSS for Round 2 of the River Valley Builders North Region for the ‘Adirondack Invasion.’
Mike Bruno’s pristine venue celebrates its 70th anniversary season with a 70-lap, $7,000 top prize tonight for the STSS Modifieds.
THE STORYLINES
The STSS heads to a new venue for the first time this season, with two more new venues on the slate in early August.
The STSS big-block/small-block Modifieds partake in the second round of the River Valley Builders North Region and Round No. 6 of the Ollie’s Overall Championship.
Sprakers, N.Y.’s Stewart Friesen leads the North Region standings after the opener at Accord (N.Y.) Speedway while St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada’s Mat Williamson heads the Overall Championship standings.
THE STARS
Edwards, N.Y.’s Tim Fuller leads the Airborne Park Speedway standings on Thursday nights in the Modified division. Fuller certainly will be a threat to claim his first career STSS victory at his home track.
While he’s still in search of his first win at the speedway, Elizabethtown, N.Y.’s Mike Mahaney sits second in the Airborne Park Speedway standings, just four markers behind Fuller. Mahaney also holds third in the STSS Overall Championship standings.
Friesen has won his last four STSS starts, dating back to the finale at All-Tech Raceway in Lake City, Fla. Despite missing events for his NASCAR Truck Series obligations, Friesen has been a dominant force every time he unloads with the STSS.
THE SLEEPERS
Napierville, Quebec, Canada’s Felix Roy burst onto the Modified racing scene in ’23. Roy now plans to travel with the STSS North Region in ’24, chasing his first career series win at the site of where he claimed the checkered just last Thursday, May 23.
Saratoga Springs, N.Y.’s Jack Lehner is another driver planning to race with the STSS North Region contingent in ’24. The ‘Ginga’ Ninja’ looks for one of the biggest wins of his career with the STSS at Airborne Park Speedway.
St. Hyacinthe, Quebec, Canada’s Steve Bernier finished fifth in STSS North Region points in ’23. While he’s cutting back this season, Bernier maintains third in Airborne Park Speedway standings and knows his way around racing with the STSS.
ALSO IN ACTION
The Sportsman, Renegades, and Mini Stocks will all join the Thursday Night Thunder at Airborne Park Speedway under their rules and procedures.
ON THE HORIZON
The STSS invades the other Mike Bruno-promoted racetrack on Sunday, June 16. Devil’s Bowl Speedway in West Haven, Vt., hosts Round No. 3 of the River Valley Builders North Region and Round No. 7 of the Ollie’s Overall Championship.
Two days later the STSS treks South to New Egypt Speedway in New Egypt, N.J., for Round No. 5 of the NJ Quality Drywall South Region and the eighth round of the Overall Championship.
