STSS Mohawk Race Day: Showdown on the Border Storylines, Stars & Sleepers

Written by Chris Moore

AKWESASNE, NY – Mohawk Race Day!

For the first time in Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco history, the series goes green tonight at Mohawk International Raceway for the ‘Summer Showdown on the Border.’

The four-tenths-mile oval on the USA side of the American-Canadian border becomes the 35th different racetrack to host the STSS in its 11th year of operation.

The night of racing precedes the 36th different racetrack to host the STSS, when the tour treks back onto Canadian soil for the ‘Rumble on the Seaway’ at Cornwall Motor Speedway in Cornwall, Ont.

The STSS big-block/small-block Modifieds go 50-laps around Mohawk International Raceway for a $10,000 top prize.

THE STORYLINES

The STSS visited Canada just one week ago when St. Damase, Quebec’s David Hebert claimed his first ever STSS victory at Autodrome Granby in Granby, Quebec.

Mohawk International Raceway will become the second new track visited by the STSS in ’24, following a successful debut at Airborne Park Speedway in Adirondack, N.Y. back in May.

Sprakers, N.Y.’s Stewart Friesen leads the River Valley Builders North Region standings heading into Round No. 8 by 31 markers over Savannah, N.Y.’s Matt Sheppard.

Sheppard sits second in the Ollie’s Overall Championship chase, just three markers behind Saint Catherines, Ontario, Canada’s Mat Williamson.

THE STARS

These two-days of racing are as close to home as the STSS gets for ‘Money’ Mat Williamson in the ’24 season. Williamson had his first stroke of bad luck last week, breaking a tie rod while leading at Autodrome Granby. The Overall point leader will look to get back on track in what is his lone ‘home game’ of the season.

David Hebert pulled off a historic victory last Tuesday at Autodrome Granby. The ‘Great Canadian Champion’ became the first ever French-Canadian driver to claim victory in STSS history. Hebert will make the trek seeking to add his name as a multi-time STSS winner.

Hogansburg, N.Y.’s Carey Terrance leads the Modified standings at Mohawk International Raceway and has made scattered appearances with the STSS over the last couple of seasons. Terrance will look to put that experience to the work at his home track and match Hebert’s upset of the STSS contingent.

THE SLEEPERS

Alexandria, Ontario’s Chris Raabe is another driver who calls Mohawk his home. Raabe began the year chasing the North Region tour before motor trouble sidelined him. Nevertheless, Raabe gained experience that will give him a chance to race at the front of the pack with the STSS at his home track.

Potsdam, N.Y.’s Preston Forbes boasts two wins to his name at Mohawk International Raceway in ’24. Forbes sits as the number three man in the track standings and will look to join Raabe and Terrance in attempting to defend their home turf.

Roscoe, N.Y.’s Michael Trautschold has been a staunch supporter of the STSS the last two seasons. Trautschold has also seen a recent uptick in performance at Utica-Rome Speedway in Vernon, N.Y., his home track. Trautschold will look to excel in a wildcard race at the new STSS venue.

ALSO IN ACTION

The Sportsman and Pro Stocks are also on the Tuesday schedule under Mohawk International Raceway rules and procedures.
