Short Track Super Series
First Time Champ: Alex Yankowski Earns STSS NJ Quality Drywall South Region Title
GEORGETOWN, DE – First time champ.
With an impressive drive from 16th to third – which included a trip to the pit area – Saturday night at Georgetown Speedway, Alex Yankowski of Covington Township, Pa., put his name in the history books as the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco NJ Quality Drywall South Region champion.
Yankowski earns $15,000 for his efforts driving for First State car owners Tim and Debbie Millman.
The final tally saw Yankowski 25 points ahead of Walden, N.Y.’s Anthony Perrego.
The title-winning season for Yankowski included a victory on July 7 at N.J.’s Bridgeport Motorsports Park.
He earned top-five finishes at Delaware International Speedway in Delmar, Del., May 8 (fourth), Action Track USA in Kutztown, Pa., May 21 (third, show-up points event), N.J.’s New Egypt Speedway June 18 (third) and Del.’s Georgetown Speedway on Aug. 27 and Nov. 2 (third twice).
Buoyed by six top-five finishes, including runner-up finishes at Delaware International and Saturday’s Mid-Atlantic Championship at Georgetown, Perrego and the Vinnie Salerno team placed second in the standings.
Matt Sheppard of Savannah, N.Y., picked up a pair of South Region victories – winning at Pa.’s Port Royal Speedway in March and Georgetown in August – placing third, 43 points from the lead.
Billy Pauch Jr. of Frenchtown, N.J., was fourth in points with a pair of runner-up finishes at Action Track USA and Georgetown in August. Ringoes, N.J.’s Ryan Godown utilized three top-five finishes to complete the top five in the standings.
Finishing sixth through 12th, respectively, were Danny Bouc of Pipersville, Pa., a winner at New Egypt; Mike Mahaney of Elizabethtown, N.Y.; three-time South Region winner (Georgetown March 10 and Nov. 2, Delaware International May 8) Stewart Friesen of Sprakers, N.Y.; Ryan Krachun of Neshanic Station, N.J.; Brandon Grosso of Montgomery, N.J.; and Mat Williamson of Saint Catharines, Ont., who won at Action Track USA in May.
